Two Weeks in Europe with the Poppens!
We are Rebekah and Jonah Poppen. We are high school sweethearts from Cambridge, Minnesota. Our first date was at the local movie theater and it was the worst movie we have ever seen! The laughter hasn’t stopped since. We have been married for a little over a year and we have been together for eight years. We currently live in Minneapolis in a cute apartment with lots of character. We are overly obsessed with our cat, Fatty Mama. We love to do everything together but we most enjoy trying new coffee shops, exploring, and having nights in at home.
This October, we went on a two week trip traveling around Europe and we are excited to share our adventures with you!
Our first stop was Rome, Italy. We both studied abroad here at different times, so it was important to us to return and see the city we loved through each other’s eyes. We spent the two days there showing each other our favorite spots, eating pasta, and exploring our neighborhood of Trastevere.
Next stop was Munich, Germany for OKTOBERFEST! Here we met up with two of our best friends to enjoy the festivities. Munich felt a lot like home, a big city filled with friendly people. Our Airbnb hosts made the experience memorable with a late night jam session and home cooked German cuisine.
From Munich we took a train to the South of Germany to Garmisch-Partenkirchen. From the moment our train pulled into the city, we were in awe. The whole city seemed like it was out of a story book. The city is nestled in a valley, surrounded by mountains. Everything was lush and green, and the scent of wood fire lingered throughout the city. This was one of our favorite stops because there was a lot to explore outdoors. We went to the peak of Zugspitze, which is the highest peak in Germany. We rented bikes and experienced the turquoise waters and beautiful landscape of Lake Eibsee. And we also hiked through the Partnach Gorge.
Next on the agenda was Amsterdam. Neither of us knew what to expect and neither of us could have expected that we would love this city so much. It was different than any European city that we had seen with its extremely unique architecture, canals, and culture. We enjoyed biking through the city and coffee shop hopping. A couple of our favorite stops were Coffee & Coconuts, The Hoxton Hotel for brunch, and Toki. We didn’t want to leave this city and we will definitely be returning!
The last stop on our trip was Paris. We decided to take it slowly so our days were spent wandering the streets and stopping for cappuccinos. We hit all of the must-see spots, but also had a couple of nights in with a movie and a bottle of champagne. Our Airbnb was on the island right behind the Notre Dame, so we were able to enjoy evening walks along the river to take in the view. Our favorite dinner spot was an Italian restaurant called Grazie. We stopped at several coffee shops but our favorites were Merci Used Bookstore, Cafe Kistune, and Ten Belles.
We were looking forward to this trip for years and it did not disappoint! If you find yourself traveling to one of these cities, we would love to share more about our experiences and recommendations with you. Our passion for traveling only became stronger on this trip and we can’t wait for our next adventure!
